"Sex and the City" takes on new product placement
What do you notice when you watch a movie? The actors, the fashions, the storyline perhaps? Take a deeper look into product placement. It may be second nature for some of us to recognize these things, but for the average person, product placement is not something easily recognized. Product placement is a way for companies to get their products on screen and promote it to their target audiences. Of course it costs money to get your companies in the spotlight and basically what it comes down to is who is willing to spend the most money.
That being said, I noticed an interesting shift in product for the big new movie premiere of the summer. Specifically, Apple has gotten amazing product placement with “Sex and the City” which was a popular series on HBO which ran for 6 years. All of the favorites like Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte, and of course sex columnist Carrie have all been seen using Apple products. After the series sadly came to an end, a movie was made to show the progression of the characters lives post SATC. Apple products were also a staple throughout the first movie. Extensive promotions accompanied the movie release including the promotion where anyone could see character Carrie Bradshaw’s Macbook Pro and explore it which definitely boosted sales for the Macbook Pro. . New Line Cinemas created a promotion where anyone could see Carrie Bradshaw’s MacBook Pro and explore it. This promotion for Apple definitely boosted sales for the MacBook Pro.
However, for the release of the second movie, it looked like Apple got the boot and HP was the product star now. HP perhaps dished out a little more dough than Apple did, and New Line Cinemas decided to go with HP for the product placement for this sequel instead. There may be fans that will miss Carrie’s Mac, myself included, but HP’s new campaigns have proved them to be a pretty cool PC.
Will HP be the new Apple in the consumer world? Who knows…but it will definitely be the new “Apple” in the “Sex and the City 2” film.
