The Real Movie About Social Media

Awhile ago I wrote about the upcoming movie about Facebook, The Social Network. While the book it is based on wasn’t exactly Pulitzer material, the movie looks to be quite entertaining and has a lot of talented people involved in it. But there is another film being released that might be a much more fascinating look into the power of social media. It’s called Catfish and it’s a documentary that follows the story of Nev Schulman, a photographer from New York who develops a friendship with an 8-year-old art prodigy named Abbey and her family via Facebook. Nev eventually develops a crush on Abbey’s older sister but things may not be exactly as they seem. The story takes many twists and turns and we’ll leave it at that to not give away what makes the film so fascinating. There’s something fascinating behind the movie and what it says about our relationships with people via social media and also living in an age where reality is such a dominant force in entertainment.

We’d like to see the movie come to New Haven, so if you are in the area sign up to help bring the movie here by following this link.
