Twitter: The Ultimate Backstage Pass

Twitter obviously allows a person to communicate what they are doing at that exact minute. The tweets just keep coming and could be about an event that is completely boring like studying for a test, or way too detailed information pertaining to the birth of a child. But, it is undeniable that we love to hear juicy gossip…especially from celebrities.

It’s impossible to listen to the radio without hearing tweets about Justin Bieber’s alleged tattoo or what’s happening with Katy Perry. But why do these celebrities tweet? It could be them simply telling the world what is on their mind, like in Sara Bareilles’ case when she tweeted about how she thought a bird pooping in her hair wasn’t a sign of good luck, but was in fact nasty.

They could also be just trying to interact with their fans, like when Shaq tweeted where he was going for dinner and met up with some excited followers. Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics also did this when he tweeted for people to meet him at the garden before the game wearing his jersey. He promised tickets to the first five people there who were properly dressed and had the password of “The Truth.”

But ultimately, Twitter is used by celebrities as a form of promoting themselves. Take Jamie Oliver, the famous chef on Food Network who posts a recipe each day, today’s being “herb salad with goat cheese.” Yes he is sharing recipes with everyone for free, but he is still using Twitter to advance his career.

Celebrities aren’t the only guilty ones here – fans are just dying to feel closer to celebrities and get a peek backstage into their lives.

Twitter has proven to be a successful communication medium for celebrities and has boosted their careers and their personal lives, with no present threat of the “twitter talk” ending in the near future.
